PEI-Private Equity International Turkey 2012 Forum in İstanbul has ended

Metin Pehlivan-Acting General Manager of The Development Bank of Turkey, Tuna Şahin-Vice President of KOSGEB, Murat Özgen-General Manager of Iş Private Equity and Kerem Onursal-Partner of TURKVEN Private Equity participated as the speakers in the panel. One of the sponsors of the forum is Istanbul Venture Capital Initiative-iVCi which our Bank is the founding partner.

Speaking at the panel on “sourcing deals to accommodate allocated capital”, Mr. Pehlivan stated that;

the public sector should take its proper and appropriate role for the promotion and expansion of the private equity sector,
  • 26 Development Agency are operating throughout Turkey and they could play intermediary role between the investors and the target companies for private equity penetration in Anatolia and
  • downside protection vehicles could be developed which provides public guarantee to partially cover the possible losses of the funds in order to promote the provision of equity capital to the SME’s in Anatolia.

Underlining that the business world in Anatolia is based on manufacturer SME’s, Mr. Pehlivan said that “magically they can shift their markets successfully within the changing and challenging conditions thanks to their flexible structures”. Taking into account the lower share of services sector in GDP in Turkey compared with the European average, he pointed that, the country’s growth would be towards this direction and there will be increasing investment possibilities in this area. In his speech Mr. Pehlivan expressed that, family owned companies as the common case among SME’s in Turkey, are reluctant to let in external partners to their companies as majority shareholders thus strategic partnership model may be attractive for these companies and he underlined that, The Development Bank of Turkey since its foundation supported joint-stock companies in accordance with its mission and contributed the enterprises in structuring as joint-stock companies. By definition the development banks has a role to introduce new tools to the finance market so the Bank is going to operate in Private Equity business.
